Microfluidics and Microstructure in Plastic Injection Molding

RKT is uniquely qualified and experienced in manufacturing tooling and plastic injection molding of precise microstructure and microfluidic applications. The MedTech community is increasingly utilizing microfluidic products to enable fast and reliable diagnostic analysis, both in laboratories and at point-of-care locations. RKT excels in molding precise microstructures with very tight tolerances and exceptional surface finishes, crucial for creating microscopic channels that guide liquids and reagents for diagnostic analysis.

Plastic-Ready Design

RKT’s clients typically specify their product’s required fluidics and core functions. RKT optimizes the design for injection molding, selects suitable materials, and designs tooling to meet the critical criteria. This collaborative effort ensures the cartridge can accurately channel very small amounts of liquid, down to tiny drops of a few microliters, leveraging both client expertise and RKT’s manufacturing capabilities.

Finest Geometries in Toolmaking

Our toolmaking department specializes in micromolding, crafting miniature structures using precise milling and erosion techniques. We achieve milling diameters as small as 0.10mm, approximately the thickness of a sheet of paper. Additionally, we utilize laser technologies and LiGA, a specialized tooling and molding process, to produce ultra-fine geometric structures for microfluidics and other precise medical technology components.

Covering the Entire Value Chain

RKT excels in microfluidics by covering the entire value chain, starting with product design and prototyping, to toolmaking, plastic injection molding, assembly, reagent filling, and finally, sealing and packaging.

Sealing Process

RKT has introduced new processes for our microfluidic products, including innovative thermobonding to provide a stable, hermetic cartridge seal after filling. It involves hot stamping a plastic film to the filled cartridge, requiring precise control of temperature, pressure, and time. Proper temperature control is required to preserve reagent integrity and prevent premature mixing while maintaining the cartridge’s geometry and providing strong adhesion of the film. Leveraging our experience and expertise, RKT customizes the optimal process for each customer’s product.

Production Under Controlled Clean-Room Conditions

To manufacture delicate and sensitive medical products, we conduct most process steps in ISO class 7 clean-room environments. These clean rooms strictly adhere to ISO 14644-1 standards and undergo regular inspections to maintain rigorous control over particle counts and germ levels.
