Two product examples illustrate RKT’s comprehensive value chain and microfluidic capabilities:
Microfluidic Assemblies
Production of PCR Test Cartridges for a Start-Up
RKT played a crucial role in the final development and production launch of test cartridges for rapid testing of multi-resistant germs (MRSA), influenza viruses, and SARS-CoV-2. We supported the client in scaling up production volumes while enhancing our internal capabilities in toolmaking and high-volume injection molding of microstructures. The project encompassed all production phases, from assembly and mounting to packaging. Critical processes included precise micropipetting of primers and probes into the cartridge’s microstructure chambers, and loading delicate lyophilizates under controlled temperature and humidity conditions in a clean-room environment.
Mini-Laboratory Disk for Dermatological Diseases in Cooperation with Research Institute
Building on our expertise from PCR test cartridge production, RKT managed the manufacturing of a lab-on-a-chip disk designed to detect psoriasis and also distinguish it from eczema. Throughout the development phase, we worked closely with a research institute that directed the pre-series production runs for the start-up.
RKT directed the specification of demolding features and radii for the injection-molded disk, and optimized the sample input module to ensure a secure seal and compatibility between the substrate and cover. Collaborating with the research institute, we developed a semi-automated assembly process, leveraging insights from the pre-series phase to prepare for large-scale production. To achieve consistent and reliable production, manual procedures were automated in advance, such as applying a hydrophobic coating to ensure uniform medium transport through the analysis chambers. Another pivotal step was the precise pipetting of minimal volumes of primer solutions into the microstructure chambers.
The production process also included the loading of lyophilized products and stick packs, as well as thermobonding at the sealing station.
Each disk underwent 100% camera inspection to verify it met all required specifications.
